Since July 2023, the island's fishers and La Playita hotel have given every turtle an alternative: going back to the sea alive.
What we do
Nidos de Vida (“Nests of Life”) began in July 2023, hand in hand with La Playita hotel and the fishers of Isla Fuerte. The idea is simple and powerful: when a turtle ends up in their nets, the fisher has an alternative. They bring it in alive, we measure it, tag it, take its photo-ID, and it goes back to the sea.
In the first year, more than 100 turtles made their way back home. Among them was an adult female loggerhead of about 100 kg, one of those releases you never forget.
Isla Fuerte is a key feeding ground for juvenile hawksbills. Following them is helping us understand the turtles’ “lost years”, a stage of their lives that science still knows very little about.
