Turtle censuses led by local fishers and the community council: ancestral and scientific knowledge, together.

What we do

In the La Plata Archipelago, in Bahía Málaga, the sea turtle censuses are led by the Los Esteros Fishers’ Association and the La Plata Bahía Málaga Community Council. With Miller Valencia, a local expert, and the Guardianes del Caparazón (“Shell Guardians”) monitors, we go out to sea to count, measure and understand.

In 2016, together with the community, we identified the main hawksbill feeding area of the Colombian Pacific here. Later, the first adult female hawksbill for the Colombian Pacific was reported in this same place.

We call this way of working La MINGA: rowing together toward a common goal. Ancestral and scientific knowledge, together, caring for the turtles of our “Pazcífico”, our Pacific of peace.
