Cartagena · Iniciativa Carey

Since 2014 we have confronted the hawksbill shell trade through training, conversations with vendors and an app to tell real from fake.

What we do

In Cartagena we have worked since 2014 against the hawksbill shell trade, together with SEE Turtles’ Too Rare To Wear campaign. We train police and authorities, talk with vendors and promote the SEE Shell app, which helps tell real hawksbill shell from imitations.

Many people buy carey without knowing that, to get it, a critically endangered turtle has to be killed. Its shell does not “shed”: that is a lie told by vendors.

Our invitation is simple and fits in one line: if you go to the coast, remember not to buy carey! #YoNoComproCarey
